6 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Painter

Choosing a painter is not just about comparing the bottom line on a quote.

A few simple questions can tell you a lot about how the project is likely to be handled.

1. What preparation is included?

Preparation can make a major difference to the finished result.

Ask what will actually be done before painting starts — cleaning, scraping, sanding, filling, priming, repairs and other surface preparation where required.

If the quote just says “prepare and paint,” ask for more detail.

2. What exactly is included in the quote?

Make sure the scope is clear.

Ask which rooms, surfaces and areas are included, whether ceilings and trims are part of the job, and whether access equipment, repairs or other extras are included.

3. Is the business insured?

Ask whether the painter carries appropriate insurance.

A professional contractor should be comfortable explaining what cover they have in place.

4. What products and coating system will be used?

Do not just ask for the brand name.

Ask what primer, undercoat and finish products are being used and why they suit the particular surface.

Different surfaces and conditions may require different systems.

5. How will communication be handled?

You do not need constant updates, but you should know how important changes, delays or additional work will be discussed.

Good communication becomes especially important if the project changes once preparation begins.

6. What warranty is provided?

Ask what workmanship warranty is offered and what conditions apply.
